Most Cantonese opera films see cinematic techniques as a tool to present the script of Cantonese opera, but some directors opted to emphasise more on the cinematic feel. This film, based on the eponymous repertoire written by Tong Tik-sang and also directed by him, is a good example of condensing the essence of the original in one cinematic experience. Tong transformed his original play into a film that stands on its own, only two singing passages from the original were kept in the film. He also re-arranged the sequence of the scenes to elevate the dynamics between the protagonists, and exploited multiple camera angles and editing to clearly express the complex storyline and character relationship, even the supporting characters are also subtly portrayed.
