One of Chan Cheuk-sang's most endearing contributions to Hong Kong cinema is his introduction of the ‘Headless Empress' franchise. The Headless Empress Bears a Son is the very first instalment of this popular series, which had gained cult status largely because of its kitschy headless premise and the hilarious employ of crude special effects. Star Yu Lai-zhen first played the role based on the Headless Empress of East Palace legend in folk tales on the opera stage in Singapore, creating a huge stir. Chan invited Yu and opera composer Lee Siu-wan to adapt it to screen, making altogether three features out of it. The films' popularity went on to inspire many other fantasy opera films with headless heroines or the East Palace Empress character.

The Betacam tape used for the screening is a sole copy; the image and sound quality is short of ideal. We appreciate your understanding.
