In the 1950s, Mak Bing-wing and Fung Wong Nui were largely relegated to supporting roles in films. However, the two started headlining their own theatre troupe in 1959. With an emphasis on following traditional standardised forms and musical styles in Cantonese opera, the troupe began commissioning scripts that were tailor made for Mak and Fung's personas, turning them into the most popular stage partners through the 1960s. Retelling the famous tale of the fearless Fa Muk-lan, Lady General Fa Muk-lan follows the troupe's signature style of reinterpreting traditional operatic actions, especially in the horse riding scenes. This is a must-see for any Cantonese opera enthusiast.
