The Private Eyes

The third film by the Hui brothers was another smashing success, breaking box office records in Hong Kong and transforming the brothers into superstars in Japan. Taking on the image of the boss who always exploits his employees, Michael Hui stars as the frugal and cowardly owner of a private eye agency, while his younger brother, Ricky—in his first major role in his older brother's production—plays the stuttering, bumbling assistant. The brothers' comedic dynamic would remain popular through the 1980s and 90s in multiple films, turning them into one of the era's iconic comedy pairings.
