This Shaoxing opera film deals with a princess (Hsia Moon) and her romance with a commoner (Ting Sai-chun). The princess's desperation to see her lover, however, infuriates her father and puts the commoner in a dangerous situation. Throughout this intrigue-filled opera, the romance and melodies carry a subtle undercurrent of class prejudice and social distinction. While retaining Shaoxing opera's all-female cast tradition and its unique staging style, Li unfailingly integrates the cinematic languages into this older artistic medium. Its mise-en-scène and cinematography gives the film a refreshing and exquisite tone. It is arguably one of his most outstanding operatic films in his later career.
