The Night Caller

Dir/Scr: Philip Chan
Prod Co: Pyramid
Cast: Philip Chan, Pat Ha, Hu Yin-meng, Melvin Wong
1985 | Colour | 35mm | Cantonese | Chi & Eng subtitles | 98min

Philip Chan puts his multitude of talents on display in The Night Caller, pulling a triple play as director, scriptwriter and actor. He did so partly to lower expenses, as the film was produced by the small company Pyramid, which he partnered with actor-producer John Shum and actor Melvin Wong to form while still employed at D & B. Yet, limits in resources had not stopped Chan from making The Night Caller a powerful film. The thriller, inspired by Brian De Palma's Dressed to Kill (1980), is at once suspenseful, engrossing and horrific, executed with stylised visual and rhythmic touches.

The screening copy is a 35mm print used for the original release of the film. However, scratches will appear in parts of the film owing to usage and wear. We appreciate your understanding.
