Tropicana Interlude

Southeast Asia, long an important market for Hong Kong films, was also a favourite location, where stories of overseas Chinese are presented in environments at once exotic and familiar. Tropicana Interlude – set in Singapore and Malaysia, starring the Taiwan actor Jimmy Lin and the China-born, Taiwan-raised Hong Kong actress Lily Ho, and directed by the Japanese director Shima Koji, under the Chinese pseudonym Shi Mashan – is in fact an idealised animation of multi-culturalism in the Chinese diaspora. Presenting Lin in a series of song and dance dressed as colourful fashion plates, the film also features a complicated melodramatic plot and picturesque Nanyang sceneries.
