The box-office success of The Singing Thief prompted Shaw Brothers to sign a contract with Jimmy Lin, kickstarting the production of The Singing Escort. Jimmy Lin plays the guitar-toting singer of a band touring in Japan, with ample opportunities to mount music sequences in front of photogenic, touristy backdrops. The film also feeds on his healthy-handsome persona, featuring him as an object of desire, aggressively pursued by five beautiful, curvaceous young women often clad in colourful bikinis. Under the tutelage of Japanese director Inoue Umetsugu, Lin thrives in crooning songs written by a young Joseph Koo, who goes on to become one of Hong Kong's most important composers.
