Musicals and martial-arts films both feature stylised movement. It is therefore not surprising that wuxia maestro Chang Cheh would team up with singer Jimmy Lin to make a singing, dancing actioner. The Singing Thief, taking ready liberty with Hollywood products like Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief (1955) and the Vincente Minnelli musical The Pirate (1948), is about a former jewelry thief who's forced out of retirement after being framed for a series of high-profile crimes. Made as a star vehicle for Lin, pairing him with It Girl Lily Ho and featuring him in set pieces that highlight his musical and physical assets, the film didn't disappoint, earning Lin instant movie stardom.
