An award-winning venture that has gained accolades in film festivals all over the world, the film's plot centres around a female ghost who comes back to modern Hong Kong 50 years after her death to search for her lover, who was supposed to have committed suicide with her. Her story moves between the present and the past, reflexively commenting on the cultural changes that have taken place in half a century. The decadent glamour, courtly etiquettes and consuming passions of the love story set in the high-end brothels of pre-war Hong Kong are not only contrasted sharply with the blandness of modern life in the 1980s but also manifest a sense of local identity as fuelled by nostalgia. Stanley Kwan's exquisite mise-en-scène with fluid camera movements and compositions by turns sumptuous and evocative, realises a delicate expression of emotions rarely found in Hong Kong films.
