Anita Mui is famous for her sometimes-androgynous image, but directors Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai took that image up a notch by casting her as the cross-dressing ‘male' lead of an uproarious Chinese New Year comedy that boldly skewers gender perception. Mui plays an incompetent, skirt-chasing king caught between the brave warrior (Sammi Cheng) whom he's destined to marry and an evil fairy (Cecilia Cheung) who has him caught in a seductive spell. In a performance that seems to be inspired by Stephen Chow, Mui is hilariously over-the-top as she moves perfectly in sync with To and Wai's breathtakingly manic comic tempo.
