Leslie Cheung had proven his comedic chops in Chinese New Year comedies, but he also proved himself to be a great romantic comedy lead in Peter Chan's delightful satire. Daringly touching on homosexuality and gender confusion—still taboo topics in 1990s Hong Kong—the film stars Cheung as a temperamental music producer determined to propel his new male protégé to stardom. The trouble is that he doesn't know that his protégé is actually a woman. Made during Cheung's retirement from music, the film gave his fans a rare chance to hear Cheung sing onscreen, including the iconic ballad theme that remains one of his most popular songs today.
