Leslie Cheung stepped on the global stage with Chen Kaige's lush and provocative Peking Opera saga, the winner of the Palme d'Or at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival and one of the most critically acclaimed Chinese films of all time. Chosen after a magazine spread of him in Peking Opera costume caught Chen's eye, Cheung learned the art from scratch to play Cheng Dieyi, an opera performer caught in a love triangle between his stage partner (Zhang Fengyi) and a courtesan (Gong Li) during one of China's most tumultuous periods. Embracing his feminine side to embody the forbidden passion that consumes his character, Cheung gave a career-defining performance that truly showcased his versatility as a consummate artist.
