In 1930's Shanghai, factory worker Manjing (Jacklyn Wu) falls for Shijun (Leon Lai). However, Shijun's wealthy family opposes to their relationship because Manjing's older sister, Manlu (Anita Mui), was once a nightclub hostess. Meanwhile, Manlu–—who married a wealthy businessman (Ge You) for financial security–—makes a devastating decision to keep her marriage alive. Ann Hui's elegant adaptation of the Eileen Chang novel is a heartbreaking drama about the lives of two women whose only crime was being born in the wrong social class. Playing a woman who must live on knowing that true love is an unattainable dream, Mui won a Hong Kong Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.
