Before Leslie Cheung dabbled into directing, he became an executive producer for the first time in this grandiose remake of the 1937 silent film Song at Midnight. Blending Phantom of the Opera with a hint of Alfred Hitchcock, this musical drama stars Cheung as Song Dan-ping, a popular stage star whose romance with the daughter of a businessman (Jacklyn Wu) costs him his career, his theater and nearly his life. A decade later, a disfigured Song gets his chance of reconnecting with his lost love through a young singer. Powerfully haunting in a role that seemed to be tailor made for the superstar, Cheung also composed the film's entrancing theme songs.
