Director Wong Kar-wai reimagines the characters of Jin Yong's The Legend of the Condor Heroes as tragic figures devastated by romantic yearnings with this subversive and heartrendingly beautiful wuxia opus. Leslie Cheung leads the all-star cast as the younger version of Ouyang Feng, a broker for assassins living an exiled existence in a remote desert before becoming the villain known as ‘Western Venom'. As the central character of the film, Cheung's melancholic persona anchors Wong's almost episodic narrative. Even as news of the notoriously difficult production made its way into the tabloids, Cheung remained one of his director's most fervent defenders, the sign of a true friend and collaborator.
