Au Revoir, Mon Amour

Set in a divided Shanghai just before the beginning of the Second World War, Tony Au's gorgeously lensed and unabashedly romantic wartime melodrama stars Anita Mui and Tony Leung Ka-fai as lovers who rekindle their love before being separated again by war. However, unlike most commercial films about the period, the film takes a rare humanist perspective that pays tribute to those who dare to put love before patriotism. As the fiercely strong-willed songstress tormented by her yearning for her beloved, Mui gives a riveting performance that earned her Best Actress nominations at both the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Golden Horse Awards.
