Producer Tsui Hark and director Ching Siu-tung kicked off a new trend of supernatural-themed films in Hong Kong cinema with this thrilling update of Pu Songling's Nie Xiaoqian. Leslie Cheung stars as a pure-hearted young scholar who gets into more than he bargained for when he unwittingly falls in love with a ghost (Joey Wang). While Tsui and Ching were responsible for the eye-popping special effects and breathtaking action scenes, Cheung and Wang provided the emotional anchor of the story as the star-crossed lovers. The result is not just a groundbreaking work of its genre, but also one of the most memorable romances of its time.
