Director Tsui Hark's loose prequel to the Better Tomorrow saga is a groundbreaking female-led gangster epic, and who's better to play a cool female gangster than Anita Mui? Set during the Sino-Vietnamese War, A Better Tomorrow III: Love and Death in Saigon sees Mark (Chow Yun-fat) travelling to Vietnam to save his father and cousin (Tony Leung Ka-fai) when he is rescued by gun runner, Kit (Mui). Mark and Kit fall in love, but like most gangland romances, it can only end in a hail of gunfire. Using the turmoil in Vietnam as a commentary on China's political happenings at the time, this is at once an explosive genre-bender and a timely allegory.
