After the runaway success of A Better Tomorrow, director John Woo and producer Tsui Hark quickly reunited the original cast for another chapter of the gangster saga. Returning into action hero mode as Kit who takes on a dangerous undercover mission that forces him to choose between his job and his family, Leslie Cheung gives another memorable performance. While Cheung was the only member of the main cast that failed to earn acting accolades for the first film, he had an ironic reversal of fortune as the only member of the sequel's cast to be nominated for best actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards, despite a slightly reduced role in the sprawling narrative.
