Leslie Cheung had a successful career as an idol in youth films, but he took a major leap as a dramatic actor with John Woo's masterpiece of aesthetic violence and heroic camaraderie. Shedding away his persona as the rebellious romantic lead, Cheung plays a young ambitious police officer betrayed by the sins of his gangster brother (Ti Lung). Originally cast as a box office guarantee for Woo's investors, Cheung proved his mettle with a powerful performance that put him on equal ground opposite his macho male co-stars. The result gave Cheung his first bona-fide blockbuster and opened the door for a wider range of roles for the talented young star.
