In 1932, the Japanese manipulated the last Qing emperor Puyi to re-establish the Manchurian empire in Northeast China, so that they can build a chemical weapon factory there. Uncle Choi, a retired and patriotic military doctor, is determined to smash the devious plan and sneaks into the Japanese base alone…Tsui Hark's quick-witted adaptation of the popular comic series from the 1950s Uncle Choi, adds an incredible playfulness and carefree spirit to the film. Such comedic energy and entertaining mechanism are prevalent in 1990s' Hong Kong cinema: simple plot, famous starring and action-packed. Tsui Hark's early republican films from Shanghai Blues (1984), Peking Opera Blues (1986) to The Taking of Tiger Mountain (2014), together with The Raid, also constitute his personal reflection on the war and the nation.
