Broadcast Queen

Dir: Wong Yiu
Scr: Lau Shun
Cast: Wan Fong-ling, Lui Kay, Nancy Sit Kar-yin, Lydia Sum, Cheng Kwan-min
1967 / B&W / 35mm / Cantonese / 97min

After the success of Movie-fan Princess in 1966, director Wong Yiu decided to return to the same theme in the following year with this companion piece. Set in the world of radio broadcast, the film follows the journey of a poor girl (Wan Fong-ling) with a heavenly singing voice from being discovered to becoming the new Queen of Broadcasting. Thanks to a healthy dose of humor and scene-stealing performances of comedy stars like Cheng Kwan-min, Yu Ming, Lydia Sum and Nancy Sit Kar-yin, the film is a cheerful, charming affair. A real-life Queen of Broadcasting herself, Wan felt right at home during the shoot, which brought her back into the radio studio.
