Director Ann Hui explores her roots with Taiwan screenwriter Wu Nien-jen in this acclaimed semi-autobiographical cross-border drama, based on the story of Hui's mother. Hueyin (Maggie Cheung) had been estranged from her mother (Lu Hsiao-fen) from a young age. As memories of her mother's discord with her paternal grandmother (Siu Sheung) resurface, Hueyin discovers that her mother was actually born in Japan. When Hueyin takes her mother back to her hometown in Japan, she faces culture shock and language barriers, things that made her understand the emotional isolation that her mother felt in Hong Kong as a stranger in a strange land. Siu Sheung's first film role may be brief, but her radio fans will instantly recognise her by the voice that made her a superstar of the airwaves in the good old days.
