Featuring a stellar cast, radical character shifts and an intriguing rollercoaster plot, this film's hit or miss: Ng Cho-fan, a do-gooder turned evil-doer who is headed down the path of selfdestruction; Wong Man-lei, an able policewoman left helpless on her own; Siu Yin Fei, an immaculate maiden who dies as a victim of assault; Lo Duen, Ng's mentor, who loses his eyesight and comes in harm's way of his sick and twisted student, are pitted against Yee Chau-shui's loyal servant, Lau Hark-suen's sly character and Fung Ying-seong's police detective, all simmering in a big cauldron of family tragedy. Post-war maladies such as the erosion of humanity and social disarray were often brought to the fore and popularised in newspaper serials at the time, which in turn were adapted for film. Though in the absence of an artful plot development the exuberant cast and plot appear to work to their disadvantage, the film exemplified the chaos and unrest that rattled the post-war Hong Kong film industry.
