Hung Chung-ho had been known for his entertaining action flicks in his native Shanghai before he found fame in Cantonese cinema following Runme Shaw's invitation to direct in Hong Kong in 1937. Going independent not long afterwards, Hung became a household name with The Adventures of Fong Sai-yuk (1938), the first-ever Hong Kong film that employed the services of a martial arts director and featured the up-and-coming Sun Ma Si-tsang. Headlining The Birth of Kiddy Stone is yet another prodigy of Hong Kong cinema, Yu Kai. As his persona morphs from an obedient, dutiful son of a destitute family suffering from bullying to an army general who displays exceptional braver y and mighty courage, the ten-year -old Yu struts his stuff and performs a variety of theatrics that confirmed his status as a box office draw. The eclectic mix of special effect stone figures interspersed with Cantonese ditties and lyrics full of whimsical wit remains a delight to watch.
