Ying-chun (Siu Yin Fei) rivals her half-sister Yip-mei (Mui Yee) for the love of King-fung (Cheung Ying) but marries a gravely ill heir to save her family on the brink of crumbling. Yip-mei seizes the chance and wins King-fung's affections but soon abandons him as his finances continue to implode. The husband dies not long afterwards and the lovers rekindle their romance upon a chance meeting. Director Chun Kim crafted not only sophisticated narratives but wonderfully fluid mise-en-scenes that transform an apparently trite melodrama into a delicate, compelling exploration of the human psyche. The three characters – one torn between family and true love, the other a romantic free spirit wresting with family duties and the third an intellectual trapped in a downward spiral of urban poverty – spoke emphatically to the audience on an emotional level through the common experience of shattered dreams and broken relationships. It also provides a treasure trove of clues to the shifting of gender expectations and social mobility in post-war Hong Kong.
