The Wynners have been a fixture of popular culture since the golden age of Cantopop in the 1970s and 80s. Writing songs in sing-along phrases that were already in the vernacular and themes relevant to real life, the pop band catapulted Hong Kong music to new heights. Cantopop titan James Wong took the directorial reins on this rare occasion, handling the majority of the music scores and lyrics and even providing vocals to some of the tracks. In a film that mirrors real life, the Wynners evolve from an earlier incarnation (unfortunately named the Loosers) with a desire to create music against the harsh realities of the industry and combat negative views of pop musicians and materialistic influences with their deeply held values of friendship, solidarity and musical integrity. Nowadays, with much of social rhetoric centres on local consciousness, Cantopop and the Hong Kong music scene could perhaps benefit from a good dose of The Wynners and their fortitude to face adversity with audacity.
