Calendar Girl, in all its glorious brilliance and spirits, is the epitome of an MP & GI urban musical. ‘Glacial Beauty' Helen Li Mei and ‘The Most Beautiful Creature' Diana Chang Chung-wen led the cast as two sisters, Jinliu and Yinzheng, who turn many heads with their alluring good looks. When the sisters enter the Calendar Girl pageant, Jinliu deliberately concedes the title to her proud little sister, who succumbs to the pleasures of dating and entertaining. Later, the sisters star in a show for their father Sun Bing (Lo Wei)'s song and dance troupe and make it a roaring success, but Yinzheng is ready to call it quits. Jinliu hatches a plan to make Yinzheng stay but her attempt backfires, which ends in Yinzheng's departure in fury… The film opens with the dazzling sights and sounds of Li's beguiling drum dance, which sizzles to the youthful and upbeat ‘I Love Cha-Cha' as Chang and Peter Chen Ho join and soak in the joie de vivre. Yao Min took the musical reins on the rearrangement of 12 contemporary numbers of the 1930s and 40s, which perfectly complement the meticulously designed costumes and stage décor, showcasing the dance routines choreographed by director Doe Ching with his cast to memorable effect. The cover of ‘Drizzles' is particularly captivating with its melodic poise.
