Ashes of Time is more an inspiration than an adaptation. Wong Kar-wai's thoughtful, elegant wuxia masterpiece takes off from Jin Yong's The Eagle Shooting Heroes , reimagining the story as a saga of solitude and romantic yearning. The film is in fact a prequel, shining the lights on several supporting characters before they become the familiar figures of the novel. Wong allows his own imagination to roam free, turning Jin's prose into visual poetry, eschewing narrative exposition for internal musings and replacing Jin's vivid storytelling with disorienting but gorgeously-animated montages featuring his all-star cast. In 2008, Wong returned to the editing room to produce an updated version he called Redux, re-scoring the film, cutting out action scenes demanded by financiers at the time and adding new inter-titles that restructures the story.
