The couple cut off the wife's head and bury it in the yard of the government compound. Then they set up Yuk-kwai (Au Fung-ming), Lau-kiu's sister-in-law, for Lau-kiu's murder by putting her embroidered shoes on the corpse and placing the corpse by a ditch. However, they have dropped one shoe in haste. Yuk-kwai and her lover Tsz-hing (Law Kim-long) are sentenced to death but Wai-ming (Chan Kam-tong), the Head of the Prefecture, reopens the case with the help of the shoe he found near the ditch as a clue. This film is rich in the elements of mystery, and the meticulous process of investigation makes it a true detective story. The scene in which the embroidered shoes are matched is portrayed in a most captivating manner.
