Orphaned maiden Wai-ching (Pak Suet-sin) decides to end it all after being sold off to a frail apparatchik as his ninth concubine. Her plan is thwarted by the sympathetic butler who suggests that she fake her own death and run for safety. Fate brings Wai-ching to Chau-fan (Yam Kim-fai), the scholar who happens to move in next door on the very night she feigns suicide. Romance, once in the capable hands of Tong, can extend beyond death. Wai-ching later passes herself off as the witty maid-servant Siu-hung, who tries every means to convince Chau-fan that she is the perfect substitute for the dead.  The Naughty Couple  is the last film scripted by Tong before his inopportune passing. Unlike the more sombre  Love in the Red Chamber , this film marks the end of Tong's illustrious life on a more light-hearted note.
