Fu-yong (Pak Suet-sin), highly regarded as Poet Laureate of Jiangnan, pledges to marry young scholar Yin-ching (Yam Kim-fai) on the very first night they meet. Yan, a corrupt official, covets Fu-yong's beauty and plots to kill his rival. Fu-yong, by Tong's pen, shines as a courageous woman much ahead of her time. In historical China, the literary circles had long been dominated by men. It was not until the Ming–Qing period that woman-led poetry societies first came into being. In the film, Fu-yong, a fearless champion of women's freedom in love and marriage, hosts a poetry gathering where talented women are invited to share their work. The celebrated sequence " Waiting for the Full Moon at the West Chamber " is an illustrative example of the "lovebirds romance drama" by the legendary Yam–Pak duo.
