On the heels of City on Fire 's success, director Ringo Lam asked his brother Nam Yin to write a film based on his prison experience. Reversing the traditional concept of good and evil, Prison on Fire portrayed convicts as righteous underdog heroes trying to overcome the oppression of prison guards and other prisoners. Lam exposes the prison as microcosm of the real world, depicting it as a hotbed of human nature's worst and best qualities; a place where brotherhood still holds weight and where desperation can drive anyone to violence. From its use of the song ‘The Beacon of Friendship' to the shockingly violent ending, Prison on Fire was a trendsetter that remains a favourite among Hong Kong cinema buffs.
