Director Ringo Lam's acclaimed and sometimes controversial "On Fire" series began with this gritty crime drama, about an undercover cop (Chow Yun-fat) torn between his duties as a law enforcement officer and the gang of robbers that he has come to call his brothers. Featuring signature traits that would define Lam's films – explosive performances, realistic action and stories about the complexities of a morally gray world - City on Fire was a stylistic breakthrough whose influences even extend across the Pacific with Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs (1992). Chow, with three Best Actor nominations next year at the Hong Kong Film Awards, ultimately picked up the prize for this film, which also earned Lam his first Best Director prize.
