In the year following Sylvia Chang's appointment as production head of Cinema City in Taiwan, the company's Papa, Can You Hear Me Sing? was a major critical and commercial success. The classic tearjerker had eight runs in five months, earned 40 million at the box office, garnered 11 Golden Horse nominations and won 4 including Best Actor and Best Original Music Score. A speech impaired army veteran turned bottle collector (Sun Yueh) discovers an abandoned baby he adopts for his own. A Mei (Liu Jui-chi) grows up and develops a beautiful singing voice that attracts the attention of a record producer. To support her father in his old age, she decides to take a chance and signs a contract. She becomes an instant success but pays the price with her freedom. Sun Yueh's moving performance provides a unique look at the realities of Taiwan's lower class through the eyes of an army veteran. The company still holds the highest record for its bold investment of NT1 million to re-master the soundtrack and hit song ‘Any Empty Wine Bottles for Sale'.
