Cinema City's strategy in setting up a Taiwanese branch company was to produce local art films and succeeded in becoming a breeding ground for Taiwan's New Wave Cinema. As head of production, Sylvia Chang took the bold step of giving Edward Yang his first chance to make a feature length film. This film was also Christopher Doyle's debut as a cinematographer and the cast included core New Wave members such as Hou Hsiao-hsien and Chen Kunhou. Lin Jiali (Sylvia Chang) and her brother's ex-lover (Hu Yin-meng) meet again after thirteen years and recount their life experiences. Born in a small town, Jiali graduated from an elite school and moved to Taipei to marry against her father's wishes. With Taiwan's economic boom, her husband's newfound wealth leads him into a life of debauchery, till one day she receives a call to identify a dead body on the beach. The film is important for its unique female perspective on the changing social and family values in Taiwan, while using an innovative narrative technique to interweave reality and memory.
