Kent Cheng's most sympathetic character is unquestionably as this film's mentally disabled Fat Cat. The role did not only earn him the Best Actor Award in the Hong Kong Film Awards, but raised awareness among the public about the mentally disabled. Fat Cat continued to enjoy immense popularity when the story was adapted for the small screen and is considered a major achievement in Hong Kong television history. In this film, Fat Cat and his mother (Chiao Chiao) endure a hard life and constant bullying. Their difficult situation attracts the sympathies of an ardent social worker Koko (Olivia Cheng), who decides to make it her mission to help them secure special government aid that will resolve their hardship. The bureaucratic hurdles shefaces strain her relationship with her boss and boyfriend Chow (Chow Yun-fat). As she overcomes frustration after frustration, Fat Cat's life sees no improvement… Thirty years later, the film continues to hold important lessons for us.
