Riding on the wave of sisterhood action comedies set by the box office success Yes, Madam (1985), the vibrant Cinema City and Tsui Hark's flourishing Film Workshop continued their collaboration to make Peking Opera Blues . Using a team of three popular actresses, they set their story on the tumultuous days of the early Chinese Republic. Tsao Wan (Brigitte Lin) plays the daughter of a warlord eager to join the revolutionary forces, while Bai Niu (Sally Yeh) is a member of a theatre troupe desperate for a debut on the stage, and Sing-song girl Sheung Hung (Cherie Chung) steals a warlord's box of jewels. Their paths collide when Hung hides the jewels with Niu's troupe and is later chased into Wan's home. The three girls, brought together purely by chance, conjure up a plan to save the country by stealing Yuan Shikai's top secret letters. An unforgettable cast, brilliant mixture of comedy, innovative style and thrilling martial arts make this film a classic mustsee.
