Set in the world of trainee actors, Once Upon a Rainbow stars Jade Hsu as Tinwai, an aspiring actress who falls for her acting course classmate Ka-ming (Ng Siu-kong). However, Ka-ming is in love with Angie (Patricia Chong), Tinwai's best friend. Choosing to give up Ka-ming for her best friend's happiness and overcome by the solitude caused by her parents' abandonment, Angie turns to drugs and ultimately embarks on an irreversible path. Despite being overlooked by audiences at the time of release, the directorial debut of television director Ng Siu-wan was a Hong Kong cinematic landmark of sorts as the first film work of three major Hong Kong cinema legends: Renowned art director Yee Chung-man (Comrades, Almost a Love Story , 1966), filmmaker Wong Karwai and superstar Andy Lau.
