Although the Chan's family has changed from what it used to be for years, the old Master Chan (Lo Duen) and his wife (Wong Man-lei) are unwilling to face the fact that they are in straitened circumstances. The burden of the house eventually lands on the daughter-in-law Wong Pik-yu's (Pak Yin) shoulders, but no one is grateful for her sacrifice; and because Pik-yu does not bear a son for the family, all she can receive from old Madam Chan is a long face. To subsidise the domestic expenses Pik-yu rents the study to a male teacher (Lee Ching), but that only leads the Chans to suspect Pik-yu is having an affair with the teacher, which eventually results in the separation with her husband Chan Yat-hok (Cheung Ying). Adapted from Yuen Long's novel A Family of Eight, Our Daughter-In-Law was billed as Pak Yin's farewell film when it was released in 1964. Credited as one of the three screenwriters of the film, Mok Hong-si was most probably responsible for the final draft of the screenplay. Well crafted, the screenplay contains some witty touches, such as Master Chan's pet phrase "As I recall…" and its variations – later in the story, the phrase actually becomes the epitome of the film. Mok's directorial skill is demonstrated through his vivid way of introducing the many characters in the Chan's family at the beginning of the film.
