Equality between men and women remains to be achieved in present Chinese society. The comedy of the sexes in the 1960s arguing for "men over women" and "women over men" respectively feels at once modern and miserable. Chi-hung (Woo Fung) and Mei-ling (Patricia Lam Fung) have been fighting from debate competition in college to the workplace. Chi-hung's uncle Chow Sze-tung (Leung Sing-po) recommends him to be the deputy manager of the company in which Mei-ling works. Annoyed about her subordinating role to Chi-hung, Mei-ling asks her father (Lok Kung), who happens to be the company's director, to promote her to general manager. Chi-hung and Mei-ling's personal grievances start to affect the day-to-day operation of the company and even jeopardise Mei-ling's conjugal happiness. Mok Hong-si helmed and wrote Lovers' Quarrels, packing the film with comic gags. Woo Fung's playfulness, Patricia Lam's sweetness, Leung Sing-po's comic mantras create surprising chemistry. Who wins in the "lovers' quarrels"? Whether men or women prevail? These questions may not be that significant after all.
