In the 1930s, renowned silent film director Hou Yao began making Cantonese-language sound films in Hong Kong. This grand wartime romance was one of the highlights from that period. Set in China's northwest region during the Japanese occupation, Incident in the Pacific chronicles a gripping love story between a brave soldier in the front lines (Lo Ban-chiu) and a beautiful spy (Lee Yi-nin) who is doing her part by sneaking behind enemy lines. As a writer, director and actor trying to do his part as a patriot during a time of war, Hou even inserts himself into the film with a small supporting role as a resistance fighter who can fight the invaders with both his pen and his guns. Special thanks to Mr Jack Lee Fong, owner of the Palace Theatre, San Francisco who has donated his nitrate collection to the Film Archive including this title.
