Wedding Bells for Hedy is sequel to Doe's delicately crafted Our Sister Hedy (1957) that scrutinises the myth of marital bliss to minute detail, by first training the lens on Big Sis (Mu Hong) who is racked with insecurity over her husband's suspected infidelity, then moving on to Second Sis (Julie Yeh Feng) and her husband (Peter Chen Ho) whose unfounded jealousy opens a can of worms. Yet it is Hedy (Jeanette Lin Tsui) who steals the show, the smooth operator who helps iron out the marital troubles of her sisters. Sparks fly and tempers flare when their opposing temperaments and likes and dislikes collide in a tour de force of witty, barbed dialogues. The ending of their dying father fulfilling his final wish by walking Hedy down the aisle on her wedding day does get a tad overly sentimental, but fairly so. Hong Kong Film Archive acquired a copy of 35mm and a copy of 16mm from Cathay Organisation in Singapore in 2004. This Digital Beta was scanned from an incomplete 35mm print with missing 7th and 8th reels amounting to about 20 minutes of visuals. We took the images on the 16mm film with a high-resolution digital camera and created four sets of pictorial storyline with brief textual descriptions. Although this is an incomplete version, the chance to view Hedy and her sisters in all its Eastman Colour glory more than makes up for this slight disappointment.
