King Yan of Song (Lee in cross-dressing role) and brother Lord Yin (Tang Bik-wan in cross-dressing role) both fall head over heels for Eighth Sister Yeung (Fung Wong Nui), though it is Yin whom she loves. When the king tires but fails to force Yeung into concubinage, he puts her behind bars as his slanderous minister Lau Man-chun (Lee Hong-kum in cross-dressing role) insinuates. No sooner, barbarian aggressors are threatening the border. The king leads his army to battle but suffers a crushing defeat. Chagrined, he beseeches Yeung to lead her family of generals to fight against the enemies. Yet upon her triumphant return from battle, Yeung is accused of having an affair with Yin. A ruckus ensues in the royal palace, raised by Yeung with great indignation…The climactic scene in which Sister Yeung counsels the king in battle sets the perfect stage for Lee to showcase her talents, demonstrating operatic manoeuvres such as ‘leg-swirling somersault', ‘hair-swirling acts' and ‘turning the body on one leg'. Not to be outshone by Lee, Fung Wong Nui and the stable boy (Leung Siu-chung, dubbed the Somersault King) pulled off one stunning move after another in the ‘spying the enemy barracks' scene, delivering a textbook performance of ostentation in Cantonese opera.
