Famous singer Ping (Siu Yin Fei) plans to leave her celebrity career behind when she marries Wah (Cheung Ying), a humble teacher. However, Wah loses his job when news of her impending retirement becomes the talk of the town, leaving the couple struggling to make ends meet. When Wah falls ill and needs money for an operation, his mother – who never approved of the two's relationship – uses the crisis as a way to force Ping to leave Wah. In order to get the money for saving Wah's life, Ping breaks up with Wah and after working at the factory and becomes desperate, finally decides to return to the stage. Compared to similar melodramas made at the time, Lee Tit makes Ping the moral centre of the story to show the absurdity of mainstream family values, portraying Ping as having more integrity than the "decent women" people have in mind.
