A fashionable lady from Shanghai comes to Hong Kong in hopes of breaking into the film industry with her charm and alluring looks. Before fame comes calling, she falls in love with a painter who hired her as a model. However, their relationship complicates considerably when Miss Shanghai finally gets her big break and attracts the attention of a local film star. The lady from Shanghai in the film is played by Miss Hong Kong winner Lee Lan, who pushes the boundaries of decency standards for films at the time with her seductive performance. Mok Hong-si's film may seem like a typical romance melodrama on the surface, but it's also depicting a brewing clash between two cities that would hit its peak in the ensuing decades. A stellar cast of Cantonese actors all took great effort in speaking Mandarin, an indication of how Hong Kong had always been a beloved platform for conciliating north-east conflict.
