The late 1930's saw Hong Kong experienced its first "talkie" horror film wave, with a horde of monsters and ghostly villains invading the silver screen. Wong Toi's terrifyingly imaginative horror film follows a young boy whose mother and little sister are abducted by spirits to "the Fortress of Death." There, the walking zombies and the demon queen (Cheng Boyin) are conspiring to let their captives die a slow and horrible death at the hands of the zombies. The boy's father immediately launches a rescue mission, while the family servant brings the boy to recruit the help of famous demon hunter Zhong Kui (Lau Kwai-hong). Made during the Sino-Japanese War, the film slyly implies that the "demons" in the film represents certain real-life invaders, lending a major morale boost to audiences at the time. Actress Lo Sai-kim will meet the audiences after the screening of Jan 10.
