If The Crazy Matchmaker shows reality in a simplified way through the use of melodrama and coincidences, Everlasting Regret is undoubtedly more serious. Since Lo Duen starred in and directed both films, audiences can make a comparison. The script written by progressive writer Wong Kuklau is also about oppression, but this time the oppression suffered by an ordinary family. Before the liberation, corruption was rife in the mainland. A law-abiding junior civil servant (Lo Duen) ekes out a living with his wife, daughter (Mui Yee) and young son. When the kid gets sick, Mui Yee has to resort to prostitution to pay the doctor's fees. Later, when the father joins the corruption scheme, he is caught in the net of justice. The tragic melodrama is replete with social criticism and irony. Cheung Ying produced and starred in the film, which could only be made with funds raised by a group of progressive people.
