Su Erning (Tian Qing) saves Pan Meiniang (Jeanette Lin Tsui) from her predicament on a trip to Macau. Falling for the damsel in distress, Su pledges his love and promises to sell his family yacht upon his return to Hong Kong and invest the money for their married life. Back in Hong Kong, Su has an affair with a married woman, Mrs Lu (Helen Li Mei), and throws his pact with Pan out of the window... Eighteen years have passed and Su is reduced to destitution on the streets when he catches sight of a couple of newlyweds emerging from a church. Shocked to find the bride a spitting image of Pan, he follows her and discovers that the bride is Pan's daughter. Filled with lament and regret, he remembers his promise to Pan of a gift – a pearl necklace – and goes to the extreme lengths of breaking the law to honour it. With the necklace placed in the bride's hand, albeit belatedly, Su is reconciled to paying the price of his crime and serving time behind bars. Tian Qing, in his first leading screen role, offered an impressive turn as a fickle lover who seduces, abandons and learns about love the hard way.
